The First Annual Canstruction® Birmingham Event to Benefit The Foundry! The Foundry Rescue Mission and Recovery Center is honored to join over 100 cities across North America and countries such as Australia and New Zealand that will hold Canstruction® competitions this year. Canstruction® is an international charity competition where architects, engineers, contractors and the students they mentor design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of each event, the food is donated to local organizations that feed the hungry in those communities. Since its inception in 1992, Canstruction® has contributed over 21 million pounds of food nationwide. Canstruction® Birmingham Begins October 5 The Foundry will host the Birmingham event at Colonial Brookwood Village. The structures will be erected October 4, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Judging will take place October 4, and prizes for the most creative entries will be awarded in the following categories: Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Jurors' Favorite, and Honorable Mention. The public is invited to view the creations October 5 - 10 and donate $1 to vote onsite for the People's Choice award. All "canstructures®" will remain on display through October 18. Teams Forming Now Whether you're an architect, an engineer or simply a compassionate person who wants to use your creativity to help others, you're invited to form a Canstruction® team. Each group pays $100 to complete, buys their own cans of food and designs their creation to fit in a 10-foot by 10-foot space. Register your team online or contact Bobbi Jo Grady for all the details. Registration ends July 31. Sponsors Needed If your business, church or other organization would like to support this landmark event, your logo will be displayed on this website and seen by the thousands of people who will view the Canstruction® entries between October 5 and 18 at Colonial Brookwood Village. A range of sponsorship levels is available. For more information, contact Bobbi Jo Grady or download our sponsors' brochure. Canstruction® Impacts Our Community Canstruction® Birmingham raises awareness about hunger and other issues faced by our neighbors who are homeless or disadvantaged. All canned food used in the competition will be donated to The Foundry to help provide the more than 300,000 meals we serve each year for the residents of our long-term programs and for hungry men, women and children in the community. Funds generated through the onsite voting and sponsorships will also further our programs to rebuild lives and restore hope of more than 2,500 people each year. |
